REST without RDF is only half as bad as SOAP

Of all the xml data formats (as opposed to markup formats such as xhtml or OpenDocument, which is not my topic here), RDF is the one that takes the lessons of REST to heart. In RDF every concept, every relation, every object has a permalink so to say, a fixed URI that identifies it.

All this leads up to a question: How can I copy an event from one of these services and paste it into another? My conclusion is that adopting Live Clipboard and microformats will be necessary but not sufficient. We’ll also need a way to agree that, for example, this venue is the same as that venue. At the end, I float an idea about how we might work toward such agreements.

This recipe presents a way of serializing & de-serializing XML using the marshal module. The XML is converted to an equivalent Python dictionary first, which is marshaled to serialize it. De-serialization first unmarshals the dictionary from the file, and constructs the original XML.
