Browsers differ in rendering images at non-native sizes, with some providing noticeably better results than others. Internet Explorer 6 in particular looked to be the least smooth when scaling images down, but some interesting workarounds are available.

typeface.js -- Rendering text with Javascript, <canvas>, and VML
Typeface is a js library that permits to render text in custom fonts without using flash or images. Else, it uses canvas, VML or SVG.
It has the disadvantage of not allowing to select the text for copy-pasting (while siFr allows it).

NodeBox is a Mac OS X application that lets you create 2D visuals (static, animated or interactive) using Python programming code and export them as a PDF, an image or a Quicktime movie. NodeBox is free and well-documented.
